The situation of the Jews in Europe was discussed today at a conference between Secretary of State Cordell Hull and a delegation from the Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada.
The delegation, which was led by Rabbi Leo Jung of New York City, appealed to the Secretary to take measures to effect the rescue of a large number of rabbinical students who were stranded in Shanghai when the Japanese occupied that city.
At the same time, Rep. Emanuel Celler, Democrat of New York, issued an appeal addressed to Generals DeGaulle and Giraud, asking the restoration of the Cremieux Law. Rep. Celler said that annulment of the law “does not serve the purpose of the removal of racial discrimination.” Pointing to the fact that recent actions of the French Committee of National Liberation have indicated that it desired to purge North Africa of all Vichy influences, he asked why the order abrogating the Cremieux Decree still stands although it is “quite inconsistent with the aims and aspirations of the French Committee of National Liberation.”
