More than 300 orthodox rabbis, representing all local orthodox organizations. will meet next Monday afternoon to discuss once more the problem of Kashruth in New York City. The conference, which will be held at the Hotel Pennsylvania, was called by the Kashruth Association of Greater New York, in conjunction with the leading rabbinical organizations of the city.
The conference has been called to adopt a plan to ameliorate the Kashruth situation, and to discuss proposals now under consideration at City Hall by Mayor LaGuardia and Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the Board of Aldermen. At a meeting held several weeks ago, a special committee was appointed which was to investigate the situation and make recommendations to the municipal administration. The orthodox rabbinate desires to express a united opinion on the subject. so that its recommendations will also be considered.
Pointing out that the present time, with the city administration ready to take action on the Kashruth problem, is of utmost importance, Rabbi Nachman H. Ebin, chairman of the Kashruth Association. appealed for unity and harmony in a statement made public yesterday.
“The unusual situation that has now been created and the special opportunity that is before us,” Rabbi Ebin declared, “must not be ignored or neglected by any orthodox rabbi or organization of rabbis in New York City. Public welfare, the matter of Kashruth and the interests of the rabbinate demand of all of us a united action. It is fortunate that this very situation has found the Kashruth Association the existing factor and force that can and must take the initiative in this important moment.”
