Joseph Burckal, a Nazi leader, who is a violent anti-Semite, was yesterday appointed Commissioner for the Saar to replace Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen, who is leaving for Vienna as special minister.
The post is regarded as highly important in Nazi Germany, which is set on regaining the Saar. In 1935 the inhabitants of the Saar will vote whether to return to Germany, stay under the rule of the League of Nations, or join France.
