Premier Yitzhak Rabin warmly thanked the tens of thousands of Jews and non-Jews who demonstrated in New York yesterday against the UN’s invitation to the PLO to address the General Assembly. He opened his Knesset address on the political situation today with a message of warm appreciation of this “expression of identity and sympathy with Israel.”
(See separate story for full Knesset speech’) Rabin declared that the demonstrators in New York expressed the views of “millions of Americans” who rejected the UN vote despite the overwhelming majority by which it was passed. Foreign Minister Yigal Allon cabled Rabbi Israel Miller, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations the group that sponsored the massive rally, to express the government’s appreciation for the solidarity rally. The rally symbolized the “unbreakable bond” which linked Israel with U.S. Jewry and with the American nation as a whole, Allon said.
