Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, today called on world Jewry to unite in demonstrating solidarity with Israel in the aftermath of the Munich massacre. He urged Jews to support the Israel Bond program during the High Holidays as a means of expressing their renewed faith in Israel in “its hour of anxiety and sorrow.”
Rabin made his appeal in a nationwide telephone conference to more than 150 rabbis in conjunction with a special effort to obtain Israel Bond subscriptions in synagogues throughout the United States and Canada on Rosh Hashana, which begins at sundown tomorrow. The telephone hookup emanated from the Israel Embassy.
On the murder of the Israeli Olympians, he said that expressions of sympathy and grief must be accompanied by world action to stop Arab terrorists and to call to account the Arab states which harbor and encourage them. The shocking events in Munich, Rabin added, have lessened the chances for peace in the Middle East. He urged maximum response to the Israel Bond High Holiday campaign to provide Israel with the economic strength to cope with any situation and to maintain its vital programs of economic development and immigrant absorption.
