Mrs. Rachel Shazar, the widow of Israel’s third President, Zalman Shazar, and one of the founders of the Women’s Labor Movement, died yesterday. She was 86. The former Rachel Katznelson, Mrs. Shazar was born in Bobruisk, White Russia and came to Palestine in 1912. She was a graduate of the Women’s University in Petersburg (now Leningrad). At the same time she attended lectures at the Academy of Jewish Studies. She later studied German literature in Berlin.
During her first years in Palestine. Mrs. Shazar taught Hebrew at the Girls Training Farm at Kinneret and was a member of kibbutzim in the Galilee and Judaea. She married Zalman Shazar in 1920. Mrs. Shazar, who was always active in Zionist affairs, was a delegate to many Zionist Congresses. She was the founding editor of Dvar Hapoelet in 1934, a member of the Women’s Working Council from 1930-63, served in various capacities with the Histadrut and was an executive member of Mapai and later the Labor Party.
