The 60th anniversary of Sholom Aleichem’s death (May 1916-May 1976) is being observed by Radio Liberty in a special half-hour Russian and Yiddish program for Soviet Jewish listeners. Dr. Gene Sosin. director of special projects, announced today. The program for broadcast on May 14 and 15 consists of University of Illinois Prof. Maurice Friedberg’s evaluation of Sholom Aleichem’s contribution to both Yiddish and world literature.
Also included is a dramatization in Yiddish of the dream scene from “Tevye” which Solomon Mikhoels adapted for the State Jewish Theater in Moscow. Mikhoels, who was murdered in 1948 on orders from Stalin, is heard in the role of Sholom Aleichem’s Tevye in a rare recording made available to Radio Liberty by Prof. Herbert Paper of the University of Michigan.
In addition to commemorating Jewish cultural and religious anniversaries. Radio Liberty’s broadcasts into the Soviet Union also provide regular coverage of Jewish emigre activities and news concerning the violation of human and civil rights of Jews inside the USSR. Dr. Sosin said.
