Israel’s Ambassador-designate to Britain and the newly elected Mayor of Haifa left Ben Gurion (Lod) Airport this morning on missions that will take the former to London and the latter to the U.S. and Canada.
Ambassador-designate Gideon Rafael said on his departure that he had specific instructions from the Foreign Ministry as to what questions to raise first when he takes up his new post at the Court of St. James. Rafael said the improvement of relations between Britain and Israel depend not on Israel’ but on the British. He said Israel did not object to improved Anglo-Arab relations but insists that they not be at Israel’s expense,
Yosef Almogi, the former Labor Minister who was elected to the Haifa mayoralty by a sweeping 58 percent majority, took off for the U.S. and Canada on a mission for the United Jewish Appeal, untroubled by the need to form a coalition to govern his city. He interpreted the national election results as a mandate for Israel to seek peace through territorial compromise but stressed that as long as there is no peace, Israel must remain on its present lines.
