Some 100 Jewish Peruvians, mostly young persons and leaders of the Jewish community, staged a demonstration here today in front of the Soviet Embassy protesting Jewish discrimination in Russia and demanding to see the Soviet ambassador, Yuri Lebedev. But their efforts were thwarted as Embassy personnel closed the doors in their faces.
The demonstrators heard both the Sephardic and Ashkenazic rabbis pronounce prayers of liberation for Russian Jews. Youngsters sang “Hatikva” as they held up signs reading “No Enslavement of Intellectuals,” “Human Rights for All” and “Wake Up Lenin, Russians Have Gone Crazy.” They then threw leaflets reading “Let My People Go” plus their protest letters to the ambassador into the Embassy garden.
