An appeal for establishment of a free, democratic Jewish commonwealth in Palestine was made today by Senator James M. Mead, Democrat of New York, in a telegram which he sent to the four Congressional representatives on the United States delegation at the San Francisco conference.
Urging “the principle of fair treatment for the Jews, ” Senator Mead called for immediate unrestricted Jewish immigration and colonization of Palestine. He said that the Jews have borne the brunt of the burden of Nazi atrocities and “should at least now be able to find comfort in Palestine which has blooned as a product of Jewish enterprise.” The Senator asked the Congressional representatives to take affirmative action guaranteeing fulfillment of promises made to the Jews after the first world war.
