— Four Senators and five members of the House, all members of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council, have asked President Reogan to conduct this year’s observance of the “Days of Remembrance” of the Holocaust in the White House and that he person-ally address the gathering. The co-signers of a letter to the President making the request, are cosponsors of the legislation, passed last year by both houses of Congress, which established the Holocaust Memorial Council as a permanent part of the federal government.
This year’s “Days of Remembrance” will be held from April 26-May 2. The signers of the letter are Sens. John Danforth (R. Mo.); Henry Jackson (D. Wash.); Claiborne Pell (D. RI); and Rudy Boschwitz (R. Minn.). The other are Reps. William Lehman (D. Fla.); James Blanchard (D. Mich.); William Green (R. NY); Stephen Solarz (D. NY); and Sidney Yates (D. III.).
The letter stated, “For millions of Americans of all faiths, the Holocaust is an event of deep emotional significance and the effort to commemorate it is a deeply spiritual one. It would be uniquely appropriate, for you, as our President, to lead the nation in expressing remembrance of the victims of tryranny.” (By Joseph Polakoff)
