Two hundred thousand dollars was contributed to the United Jewish Campaign of Greater New York by a group of real estate men of New York City at a dinner Monday night at the Park Lane Hotel. Mayor James J. Walker was the guest of honor at the dinner. The guest of honor at the dinner. The guest of honor and Louis Marshall addressed the gathering.
“I am under countless obligations to the Jews of New York both politically and personally. My finest friendships are among them.
“As Mayor of New York City I feel it my duty to take an active interest in this Campaign, in appreciation of what the Jews have done for this city, and also in appreciation of their willingness to reach out a helping hand to the unfortunates across the seas.
“The $6,000,000 which New York has been asked to contribute to this fund must be obtained, and if it means anything to the Jews of New York that the Irish Catholic Mayor of this city is so vitally interested, I hope that you will capitalize this interest to the fullest extent,” the Mayor stated.
A committee to canvass the real estate men of New York during the drive was organized with J. Clarence Davies as chairman; Elias Cohen Samuel Hoffman, Hyman Sonn and Harry Goodstein as vice-chairman.
E.T. Backus, who said he was the son of an Episcopalian clergyman contributed $1,000 and volunteered to organize a committee of non-Jewish real estate men for participation in the drive.
