An assurance of “a reasonable life” outside Germany and Europe was stated today to be the only solution for Jewish displaced persons, by Assistant Secretary of War Howard C. Peterson.
Speaking on a nation-wide broadcast on Germany and the occupation, together with Assistant Secretary of State John H. Hilldring, Petersen, who is charged with administration of occupied areas, pointed out that the majority of observers have reported the desire of most of the Jewish displaced persons to go to Palestine. “As long as they continue to remain in camps in Germany even under the best of conditions,” Petersen declared, “there is an increased danger of breakdown of morale, violent protests and even large-scale suicides.”
