The reclaimed area in the Haifa Harbor will be treated as a State Domain and thus be administered by the Department of Lands, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns.
The land will be surveyed in due course, and when brought into conformity with the town plan, will be leased out in plots. A fair portion of the reclaimed area will, however, be required by the Government for the Customs Department. It is anticipated that a number of important business houses will put in bids for long term leases on the plots in this area.
It is understood that it is not the government’s intention to throw open this land to development by a nonofficial body.
It was reported in the Palestine Arab press last December that the Palestine Government was negotiating the lease of the reclaimed area of Haifa to a firm by the name of the Anglo-Swiss Company, Ltd. These reports claimed that the lease was to be for a period of 49 years at the rate of £10 to £13 per square meter.
