Belief that a settlement acceptable to all concerned would be found concerning the refusal of the Israeli rabbinate to recognize Jewish divorces granted by American Conservative rabbis was voiced today by Dr. Zorach Warhaltig, Israel’s Religious Affairs Minister.
The Rabbinical Assembly of America, representing the Conservative rabbinate, disclosed last month it had engaged Gideon Hausner, former Israeli Attorney General, to examine the possibility of legal action on the issue. The rabbinical group said it intended to force the issue to a conclusion.
Dr. Warhaftig said that he would take the issue up with the new Chief Rabbinate which he said would be elected next Tuesday. He said the Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim, and Tel Aviv’s Chief Rabbi, Isaac Untermann, were the principal candidates.
