Reconstituted United Jewish Appeal Elects Officers; Asks Assistance for Children

Rabbi James G. Heller, Rabbi Jonah B. Wise and William Rosenwald were elected to serve as national chairmen of the reconstituted combined campaign of the United Jewish Appeal, it was announced here today. The national chairmen were named at the first meeting of the corporation of the United Jewish Appeal, which is the nation-wide fund-raising organization for the Joint Distribution Committee, the United Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service.

I. Edwin Goldwasser of New York, and Charles J. Rosenbloom of Pittsburgh were elected national co-treasurers. Isidor Coons and Henry Montor were elected executive vice-chairman to direct the national campaign. The campaign program drawn up at the meeting calls for the launching of an intensive Fall fund-raising effort at the beginning of the Jewish New Year 5706, which will be obserbed on September 7, 1945. Spring drives in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal are now nearing completion in 3,000 communities.

In a statement issued following the meeting, the United Jewish Appeal emphasized that the most tragic problem confronting its agencies was the plight of tens of thousands of homeless Jewish children, a large proportion of whom lost their parents in the concentration camps and death factories where the Nazis sought to bring about the extermination of the Jews of Europe.

“If the future of the surviving Jews of Europe is to be secured, every effort must be made to save and restore the younger generation to a normal and fruitful existence,” the statement said. “The parentless Jewish children must be removed from the scenes of devastation and horror without delay. The task of bringing back to health and restoring the children to an environment of freedom and security must be given the highest priority in the program of reconstruction and resettlement.

Representatives of five thousand Jewish organizations in New York City today launched a $2,000,000 Emergency Campaign for Destitute European Children at the Sixth Annual Officers Luncheon of the Council of Organizations of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York, at Webster Hall. Judge Jonah J. Goldstein of the Court of General Sessions, honorary chairman of the Council, was principal speaker.
