Record contributions amounting to the equivalent of $300,000 were pledged to further Jewish education in South Africa at a banquet held by the South African Board of Jewish Education. The guest of honor was Gideon Hausner, former attorney-general of Israel who led the prosecution in the Eickmann case. The gathering, which included the mayor of Johannesburg and top Jewish community leaders, was told by Mr. Hausner that Jewish education is the one great essential of Jewish survival. He complimented South African Jewry for its progress in this field, particularly the establishment of Jewish day schools.
