Israelis sweltered today under a heat wave brought about by the worst khamsin in recent years. The intense heat resulted in a number of fires around Nahalal and in the Jerusalem corridor which destroyed crops, stores and agricultural equipment. Agricultural Ministry spokesmen expressed fear that the blistering heat, if it continues, would damage crops in the fields.
A high temperature of 108 degrees in the shade was registered today at Lydda Airport. The temperature along the coastal plain reached 104 degrees. At Eilath, Israel’s port on the Gulf of Akaba, a temperature of over 118 degrees was recorded Sunday. The temperature there has been receding slowly since Sunday as the slow moving low pressure complex, which brought the khamsin and the blistering heat, moved northeast over central Israel.
