REDUCTION OF U.S. AID TO MIDDLE EAST INDICATED

Foreign Operations Administrator Harold Stassen revealed today that the major portion of American military, economic, and technical assistance in the coming year would be allocated to the Far East. It was indicated that Europe and the Middle East might receive less than in previous years.

Mr. Stassen said the development assistance category does include some aid for Israel and the Arab states, but did not specify how much. He disclosed that the requested allocation for aid to the Near East, Africa, and South Asia totalled $569,100, 000. However, it was impossible to tell from this figure how much was intended for the Arab states or Israel because of the vast area covered in the regions specified.
