Reform Judaism’s central body hailed the Mideast peace initiative of Secretary of State George Shultz Sunday, and said Israel should announce its willingness to withdraw from some of the administered territories as a way “to stimulate the peace process.”
The group passed a resolution commending the 30 U.S. senators who endorsed the peace initiative and wrote Shultz to that effect in March.
The resolution was adopted by members of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations board of trustees at their semi-annual meeting in New York.
Twelve other American Jewish organizations also made an announcement of support of Shultz, in a telegram sent to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir on June 9.
The telegram, sent during Shamir’s visit to the United States, proposed that peace and security for Israel could only be achieved through a “political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the recognition of both peoples’ right to self-determination.”
Sponsoring organizations included the Labor Zionist Alliance, Americans for Progressive Israel, Holocaust Survivors Association U.S.A., International Center for Peace in the Middle East and Progressive Zionist Caucus.
