The 60th anniversary convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis concluded here today after electing Dr. Jacob Marcus, of Cincinnati, president of the organization. Dr. Marcus, a professor of Jewish History at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, is the first person outside of the active rabbinate to head the Conference.
Other officers elected were : Dr. Philip S. Bernstein, of Rochester, H.Y., vice-president; Rabbi Phineas Smoller, of Los Angeles, executive director of the western regional office of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, treasurer; Rabbi Sidney L. Regner, of Reading, Pa., financial secretary; and Dr. Isaac E. Marcusson, of Macon, Ga., administrative secretary.
Prior to its conclusion, the convention adopted a resolution deploring the celebrations by Jew of non-Jewish religious holidays in homes and in communal institutions. The parley also: deplored “the use of gambling devices to raise funds for Jewish religious and communal institutions.” adding that this practice was “contradictory to our faith and traditions.” The convention further adopted a resolution advocating the introduction by the government of a system of compulsory national public health insurance.
