A proposal that the 475 Reform Jewish congregations in the United States establish local committees to “put the social principles of Judaism to work” has been made by the Joint Commission on Social Action of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

The Joint Commission’s recommendation noted that “it has become increasingly clear that a grassroots social action program within our individual congregations is badly needed in our time.” It added that the Jewish religious bodies have the same responsibility as non-Jewish religious bodies “to seek to strengthen democracy and the ideals of justice by translating our faith into concrete social action.”
