The situation of thousands of Jewish refugees who fled from Nazi-occupied Poland to Soviet Poland is desperate, according to reports of neutral observers reaching here today from the Soviet territory.
The refugees are not permitted by the Russian authorities to obtain relief, and a large number of them were recently rounded up and sent to Siberia and Ural districts, the reports said. The Jewish middle class, comprising about 80 per cent of the Jews in Soviet Poland, have been deprived of livelihood, it was declared. Discontent was said to be making itself felt because of shortage of food. It was declared that there had been many arrests of Jews, some of whom were exiled to Siberia.
