A group of Jewish emigrants, including refugees from Poland, have sailed for New York on the Swedish-American liner Drottingholm, with the assistance of the HIAS-ICA Emigration Association, according to a cable received today by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society from the HIAS-ICA office in Kaunas. The ship is scheduled to arrive here about Oct. 22, and the HIAS has made arrangements to receive the emigrants.
The cable said that a representative of the HIAS-ICA in Kaunas had gone to Wilno, newly acquired by Lithuania, to help refugees from Poland residing there and to arrange for the emigration of those having visas for the United States and other countries.
The HIAS said it had learned in circles close to the State Department in Washington that before the American consul left Warsaw he issued numbers under the Polish quota for the months of October and November to American consulates in other countries so that Polish refugees in neutral countries could receive these visas. The American consul in Warsaw will be able to resume on Nov. 1 issuance of visas to those in Poland holding quota numbers, it was said.
