A resolution appealing to the Soviet Union to rescind its excessive visa charges for Jewish academicians and intellectuals seeking to emigrate was adopted unanimously at the closing session of the regional conference of non-governmental organizations accredited to the United Nations. The resolution stated that the Soviet policy, if continued, “would convert intellectuals, academicians and artists into new slaves of the 20th century.”
The resolution charged that the Soviet visa fee policy “causes injury to the human personality and violates the accepted norms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.” The resolution was introduced by Mrs. Runia Lasky, representing the Mexican Association for the United Nations, and Marc Turkow, secretary of the Latin American Jewish Congress. Its approval was in general terms without specifying the countries voting.
