The German Government, it was learned today, is bringing large numbers of “Aryan” doctors into Berlin from the provinces to fill the gap which will be created when all Jewish physicians here lose their licenses on Oct. I.
The recent decree forbidding Jewish doctors to practice after that date will deprive Berlin of 1,561 of its 6,949 physicians.
Since a large part of the Jewish doctors’ patients have been “Aryans”, the authorities are making arrangements to prevent a scarcity of medical men by bringing in provincial practitioners.
The Government, however, also wants to prevent Jews being treated by the “Aryan” doctors. It decided, therefore, that 200 Jewish doctors may continue to treat their coreligionist, not as licensed doctors but as “Kranken Behandler”–literally, handlers of the sick.
These Jewish practitioners will have special plaques in front of their offices, to avoid any confusion. Since, according to official estimates, there are now 200,000 Jews in Berlin, there will be only one physician for every thousand Jews after Oct. 1.
