The German Ambassador to the Holy See was instructed today to protest sharply to the Vatican against the anti-Nazi encyclical issued by Pope Pius, the Havas News Agency reported. The Reich may even denounce the Concordat, it was reported.

Dr. Diego von Bergen, the German envoy, was ordered to reject the lope’s charge that the Nazi authorities had in fact nullified the provisions of the Concordat and prevented the Catholic Church from freely exercising its recognized rights.

The Concordat between Germany and the Vatican was signed in 1933 shortly after Chancellor Adolf Hitler took power.
