the ire of Nazi editors and orators).
The report, despite all denials, was being given wide circulation and was believed to be arousing considerable feeling among the already aroused storm troopers, having the effect of diverting their anger at recent developments in the directions of the Jews.
Circulation of this report was accompanied by a new wave of propaganda denouncing the Jews and those who still do business with them as “traitors.”
PROVINCIAL STATE UNKNOWN
While no attacks on the Jews have been reported in Berlin since the assault on the Trianon Cafe on the night of July 2, in which two Americans were involved, some fears exist as to what has been happening in the provinces. A strict censorship on trunk calls has been put into effect and correspondents in the provinces have been unable to communicate their reports.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported last night that the political police at Munich had ordered all long-distance calls to be conducted in German. Interruptions are customary.
The political situation, the composition and course of the government, took no turn for clarification today. Vice Chancellor Franz von Papen was reported about to visit President von Hindenburg to discuss with him retention of the former’s position in the government. It is now understood fairly definitely that von Papen no longer wishes to remain in the government following the occurrences of the past week, which brought death to intimate friends and aides, including Hubert von Bose, secretary of the vice chancellory, and Edgar Jung, an intimate friend who had assisted him in the preparation of the famous Marburg speech, in which strong criticism of the Nazi regime was voiced for the first time from within Germany.
It appeared clear that Hitler would take every effort to keep Prussian Premier Goering from obtaining the post to be vacated by von Papen and would prefer to see Rudolf Hess, minister without portfolio and his adjutant in all party matters, in the vice chancellorship.
Dr. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda and Public Enlightenment, who was considered a leader of the radical Nazi wing, now in disfavor, denied here that he was to become German envoy to Warsaw as reported in the Warsaw press and rumored in diplomatic circles here, and insisted that he was to remain in his present post.
Goebbels has been a leader in the anti-Semitic campaign and his reported eclipse had been expected to result in amelioration of conditions for the Jewish population. Whether Dr. Schmitt, Minister of Economics, who has been given virtual dictatorship over the economic system of Germany, may be able to check the agitation for a renewed anti-Jewish boycott drive, remains to be seen. His failure to enforce decrees in the past against boycotting was one of the primary causes for his profferment of resignation, which was not accepted.
