With the deadline for the first installment of the billion-mark reprisal “fine” only 24 hours off, Jews seeking to raise funds by sale of jewelry found today that the officially designated pawnshop of the Chamber of Commerce and industry was not yet open for business. Inquiries elicited the response that the store had received no instructions to buy jewelry from Jews.

About 250,000,000 marks (approximately $100,000,000) is expected to flow into the Reich’s coffers tomorrow when the first installment is paid of the “fine” levied on the Reich’s Jews in reprisal for the assassination of a German Embassy official in Paris by a Polish Jewish youth. Unable to turn their jewels into cash, most Jews are exhausting their bank accounts and turning over securities to meet the obligation.

The Gestapo today banned circulation in the Reich of the book, “Where Now Little Jew?” by Magnus H. Hermannson published by Albert Bonnier *** Co. of New York. (According to Bonnier *** Co., the book was originally published in Swedish and was translated into English.)
