The Saar Commission has received a communication from the German Government denouncing a portion of the press in this region for outspoken attacks on the Nazi strangle-hold on Germany, it was disclosed today.
Citing an item published by the Saarbruecken Volksstimme, which after von Hindenburg’s death wrote, “We will now dismiss von Hindenburg as a representative of soulless barbarism and of a Germany which turned its back upon civilization,” Reich officials wrote:
“The government notes with extreme surprise that the Saar Commission has done nothing to put an end to such unparalleled excesses, which violate international usage as well as the character of the Saar territory, which is Germany, and whose inhabitants are German. The German Government therefore strongly protests against the commission’s attitude and expects that the necessary preventive measures against recurrence shall be taken forthwith.”
