“Halfbreeds” and “quarterbreeds” of Jewish blood will hereafter be compelled to do military and labor service under a Reich conscription ordinance made public here today, the Havas News Agency reported.
The new law modified article 15 of legislation enacted on May 25, 1934, which specified that only “Aryans” were eligible for active army service.
It is new stated, a man will not be considered a Jew for military or labor camp purposes if he has not more than two Jewish grandparents and does not practice the Hebrew religion.
Each candidate presenting himself at a recruiting office must make the following statement: “After a careful examination I know of no circumstance justifying the assumption that I am not a Jew. It has been explained to me what a Jew is. I know I will be discharged from the labor or military service in the event this statement should prove false.”
The ordinance stipulates that where doubt exists, the candidate must obtain a genealogical certificate, but he will not meanwhile be exempt from his service obligations.
