Rational factors will play a very small part in the present German situation and therefore an exact prophecy of immediate developments is extremely difficult whether one is on the spot or observing from a distance, G. Harrison Brown, European representative of the Chicago Committee for Defense of Human Rights Against Nazism, declared just before leaving Chicago to return to his post in London.
“Several things stand out despite Goebbel’s myth of a Germany that is unified behind Hitler,” Mr. Brown explained. “This myth has been exploded once and for all. It is now only a question of time—a short time—before the mass of the German people will realize that the self-proclaimed ‘god’ Hitler and his regime are solely ‘fronts’ for the armaments magnates of the Ruhr.”
“The ‘revolt,’ which may be suppressed temporarily,” Mr. Brown continued, “was a ‘revolt’ of those who took the socialism end of national socialism seriously.”
“Thyssen will not let his newly-installed industrial feudalism go so easily. He seems to have had in mind a complete change of front from Hitlerism to a monarchy. Now that Hitler and Goering have toed the line to his desires, they probably will remain as Thyssen’s front.”
MORE TROUBLE SEEN
“Von Papen has shown himself to be but a stupid political agent of Thyssen and is likely to be sacrificed in the tussle.
“Goering claims to have suppressed the revolting S. A. leaders. Those leaders, however, were being pressed by the mass tendency towards the left of the S. A. Thyssen and Hitler had the choice of trying to quell this drift to the left either by scaring the rank through the murder of their leaders or by turning machine guns on the rank and file itself.
“It is interesting to note that Goebbels, ‘the snake’ who was notoriously allied with Roehm and Hitler left extremists, has once more trimmed his sails to suit the circumstances and sided with Hitler because he realized Hitler would emerge victor. This makes the fourth time in which this arch cynic has been on the side of intrigue against Hitler but has scrambled back to Hitler when he saw Hitler would win out.
“In my opinion,” Mr. Brown said in conclusion, “Hitler’s own chances of seeing next Christmas are not too good. Goering aspires to his seat and it may yet come to another ‘bumping off’ match between those two.”
