Neutral observers in Berlin put the so-called secret German debt at 20,000,000,000 to 25,000,000,000 marks, the New York Times reported today in a dispatch by its correspondent Otto D. Tolischus.
The observers were unable to back their estimates with any figures that have been made available, the dispatch says. German finances, next to German armaments, are about the most carefully guarded secret of the Third Reich.
There are indications that the German Government would be unable to furnish exact data on its “secret debt” even if it wanted to, the report states. That debt is being increased through so many varied channels that the Government itself is losing track of them.
