In a New Year’s broadcast, spokesmen of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths and the Army Chief of Chaplains today urged men in the nation’s defense forces to look to religion for the spiritual and moral strength to make them better defenders of democracy. The message was delivered over the Mutual Broadcasting System network.
Participating in the program were Col. William R. Arnold, Chief of Chaplains; the Rev. Dr. Paul Dwight Moody, director of the Protestant General Committee on Army and Navy Chaplains; the Rev. Dr. Robert E. McCormick, military chancellor of the Army-Navy Diocese of the Catholic church, and the Rev. Dr. David de Sola Pool, chairman of the Committee on Religious Activities of the Jewish Welfare Board.
Rabbi Pool told the men; “Hold fast to the ethical and religious teachings you have learned at your mother’s knee in your homes, in your churches and synagogues. Thereby you will best honor your uniform. Thereby you will bring to the country which you are serving that strength of upright manhood and noble purpose which is its ultimate defense against danger from within as well as from without.”
