Those who foster racial and religious bigotry in this country are a menace to America’s national unity. Benjamin F. Fairless, chairman of the board of the United States Steel Corporation, told an audience of 1,000 industrial, civic and welfare leaders last night, at a dinner in his honor sponsored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Mr. Fairless was presented at the dinner with a gold plaque “for distinguished service in the field of human relations.” Speakers at the dinner included Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, minister of Marble Collegiate Church; the Very Rev. Paul C. Reinert, president of St, Louis University; Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, president of the N.C.C.J., and Dr. Oscar Lee, head of the department of race and cultural relations of the National Council of Churches of Christ.
