Religious Extremists Again Burn Cars in Jerusalem Streets; Five Vehicles Destroyed

The sporadic burning of vehicles in Jerusalem by religious extremists, as a warning against driving cars on the Sabbath, was renewed at dawn today. Five cars marked by the zealots as having been used on the Sabbath, were burned. They included cars owned by the Jewish Agency, the labor cooperative Solel-Boneh and the Hamkasher Bus Company.

The police detained two religious students for interrogation. The incident provoked resentment among the population and Eri Jabotinsky, leader of the Herut Party, sent a wire to the Speaker of the Israeli Parliament urging a debate on the issue “before more damage is done.” It was recalled today that Mayor Shragai of Jerusalem, himself an Orthodox leader, recently condemned such acts as “perverted religious fanaticism.”
