The essence of civilization “is the advancement of the ideal of the freedom of religious opinions and of the exercise of religious practices,” Chancellor Harry Woodburn Chase of New York University declared tonight at an assembly of some 300 persons inaugurating the second half-century of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Henry S. Hendricks, member of the seminary’s board of directors, was also scheduled to speak, and Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the seminary, was to preside.
