A list of candidates running on the religious ticket won a majority of the seats in the main, city-center Jewish Community Council here, according to tabulations of the Council elections made public here today.
Jewish communities in nine sections, in the city and in the suburbs, held Council elections for the first time in seven years. The Turkish authorities recently lifted the ban against such elections. The religious group ran its own ticket, including Orthodox congregational and lay leaders. Two other tickets were composed of an independent group and of members of the old Council.
The group that won control in the main city Council had pledged various reform. The nine separate Councils deal with Jewish religious, cultural and welfare activities in their areas.
