At the request of the National Jewish Commission on Law and Public Affairs (COLPA), the Board of Higher Education of the City of New York has sent a memorandum to the Presidents and Registrars of the sixteen city colleges which comprise the City University of New York reminding them of their obligation to make special arrangements for religious Jewish students who are unable to attend Friday night and Saturday classes. COLPA contacted the Board of Higher Education when it learned that because of the Open Admissions Policy that is to go into effect starting the coming September, many of the colleges would be holding regular classes on Friday night and Saturday, Under a state law supported by COLPA and adopted in 1966, religious students who could not attend classes Friday night and Saturday must be offered parallel educational opportunities at other times during the college week. Julius Berman, President of COLPA, praised Chancellor Albert Bowker of the City University for his cooperation on this matter of great importance to the religious Jewish community.
