Plans were being made today for the convening of a Western Pennsylvania Conference of the United Synagogue of America, following a meeting of officials of congregations, men’s clubs, sisterhoods and young people’s leagues in Pittsburgh and Johnstown affiliated with the United Synagogue of America.
A committee was formed to arrange for the conference, which will become a permanent regional branch of the United Synagogue. The division will be formed for the purpose of rendering assistance to the smaller communities which have no organized religious life and to arrange for activities among the groups already organized.
The branch will comprise not only congregations in the region but sisterhoods, men’s clubs and young people’s groups.
Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, executive director of the United Synagogue of America, was the principal speaker at the meeting.
The meeting also extended an invitation to the United Synagogue to hold its annual national convention this spring in Pittsburgh.
