Rep. Emanuel Celler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and author of the House-approved displaced persons bill, today testified before the Senate immigration subcommittee. Rep. Celler took exception to Sen. Pat McCarran’s statement earlier this week that the United States has taken in more DP’s than all other countries combined, citing I.R.O. statistics to prove that Israel actually accepted more refugees than the U.S.

Meanwhile, support is being mustered by Senate majority leader Scott W. Lucas and Sen. Irving Ives to blast DP legislation loose from Sen. McCarran’s grasp and bring the Celler bill to the Senate floor. Sen. Ives predicted quick action on a discharge petition demanding immediate action. Six Democrats and six Republicans are being selected to sign the petition.
