It became known today that Alfred Apfel, the noted lawyer, who was arrested together with those taken into custody immediately after the Reichstag fire, has attempted suicide in prison.

Alfred Apfel, one time president of the Zionist Organization in Berlin, is known to have had no affiliations whatever with Communism, and it is suspected that his arrest is due only to the fact that he had appeared, in his professional capacity as lawyer, in defense of a Communist.

Among the new arrests are also Victor Schiff, foreign editor of the “Vorwaerts,” Councillor Ahrens, and Alexander Santo, Liberal member of the Federation of the Jewish Congregations in Prussia.

It is understood that the report of the arrest of Friedrich Stampfer, editor of the “Vorwaerts,” was premature, and that the police are still searching for him.
