The government is now considering the establishment of a numerus clausus regulation similar to the Hungarian numerus clausus, to apply to all Austrian universities, the Socialist press reported yesterday.

The measure contemplated would empower the University authorities to select students on the basis of ability, social standing and patriotism.

The official reason for the measure would be the overproduction of professionals who cannot be absorbed into the life of the country under present economic conditions.

Its practical effect, however, would be to reduce the number of Jewish students.

The government will issue the measure in the form of an emergency decree should it fail to receive a Parliamentary majority, the Socialist press asserts.
