An attempted assassination of General Hermann Wilhelm Goering, Premier of Prussia and head of the secret police, was rumored here today, when a hand grenade exploded on the boulevard Unter der Linden shortly after Goering’s ear was said to have passed.
The grenade, which shook windows all through the district, was tossed near the corner of the boulevard and Neue Wilhelmstrasse, and hit a passing taxicab.
TAXICAB WREEKED
The taxicab was demolished by the explosion and the driver’s arm injured.
Police removed the wreckage of the taxi and began an investigation of the affair. They determined that the grenade was made by filling a tin can with explosives. While the pavement was not visibly damaged, police surrounded the spot and ordered pedestrians to walk on the opposite side of the street.
Two arrests were said to have been made by the police, but all information on the affair was refused at police headquarters. Police insisted that the attempted assassination was not aimed at the Prussian Premier, who. they said, was miles away at the time.
However, spectators declared that they saw Karl Ernst. Nazi leader who was known to have been with Goering, pass in a car one minute before the explosion.
