The Jordanian Government was reported today to be concealing the discovery in the Old City of Jerusalem of archaeological remains dating to the period of the Judean kings (Ninth Century B. C. E. ). It was reported in consular circles here that the discovery was made when workmen were repairing the floor of the Mosque of Omar (the Dome of the Rock), the traditional site of Solomon’s Temple, in preparation for the Moslem holy month of Ramadan.
The Jordanian authorities are said to have suppressed the news of the find to avoid possible political complications which would result from requests for access to the holy site by various religious authorities.
