Report Nazi Deal to ‘solve’ Austrian-jewish Question

A movement has been started in government circles to solve the Jewish problem through agreement with the Nazis and the German national wing of the Austrian Catholics, the Oesterreichischer Beobachter, leading Nazi paper, declared today.

According to the Nazi paper, the solution will not involve regulations such as were adopted in Germany, but will include measures to remove Jews from leading positions in Austrian life. The new regulations for Austrian Jews will go into effect only with the reorganization of the Austrian State with economic and public life on a corporative basis, the Beobachter said.

CONTRARY TO ASSURANCES

It is believed that the project featured by the Beobachter emanates from Dr. Emmerich Czermak, president of the Austrian Christian Catholic party, the Chancellor’s own party. However, there is nothing to indicate that the Austrian government has made any move to indicate its acceptance of Dr. Czermak’s proposals.

Dr. Czermak, at a conference of his party immediately after the crushing of the Socialist uprising attacked the Jews, deciding## not a single Jew was to be found among the Socialists captured by government forces and said that the Jewish Socialist leaders fied rather than take part in the fighting.

FAVORS ‘NUMERUS CLAUSUS’

He is known to be an advocate of restrictive measures against the Jews. Recently he advised the Jews of Austria to scrap assimilation, telling them that a “Jew was a Jew and not a German”. He also declared that he was in favor of ‘numerus clausus’ laws against the Jews, since this would lead to the organization of specifically Jewish schools.

The Austrian census, which is to begin on March 22, will not contain columns for race and nationality, unlike the census of 1923, which contained such columns and which was utilized for many years for anti-Semitic propaganda.

The decision is due to the inability of the government to agree. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency learned from reliable sources that some members of the Dollfuss cabinet insisted on including such a racial column, but in view of the strong opposition of a group of cabinet members who are against racial discrimination in official state documents, the cabinet agreed to eliminate the racial column. An official footnote adds that only one language is to be given in the census form showing the culture and the circle to which the individual questioned belongs. This means that Jews will be able to give German as their language if they so desire.
