The Polish government has agreed to receive a delegation from Israel, it was announced here at the Fourth Congress of the World Federation of Polish Jews by Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Federation of Polish Jews in the U.S. Schindler said he was informed of this by Polish officials during his recent visit to Poland. He said the Minister of Religions offered to arrange an audience for the Israeli delegation with Pope John Paul 11, who is of Polish origin, during their journey to Poland.
Schindler, who is also president of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, said he was also informed that the Polish government has agreed to recognize the World Federation of Polish Jews as the sole body authorized to negotiate with it over reparations for Jewish public property in Poland and such matters as research and memorial projects.
Shimon Shormei, director of the Yiddish theater of Warsaw, told the conference that a number of memorial institutions, including a research center, have been established in honor of the famous educator Janusz Korczak. The contributions by Polish Jewry to the development of Israel were also discussed.
