Informed sources reported here today that Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, Israel’s ambassador to the US, is under consideration for the presidency of the Haifa Technion. A special committee named to make recommendations for the post to the Technion board reportedly approached Rabin but it was understood he has not yet responded. The committee also discussed the post with Gen. Amos Horev, former Air Force commander; Reserve General Dan Tulkowsky; Yeshayahu Lavie, former Defense Ministry director-general; and the acting Technion president, Prof. David Ginsburg but negotiations remain open.
Prospects of Rabin’s being named to the Technion presidency reportedly were heightened by complications which were understood to have developed over plans to name him to a ministerial post in the present Cabinet. If a crisis develops over the effort by the Independent Liberals to introduce a limited civil marriage bill, prospects for a Rabin appointment to the Cabinet would improve, some sources said. Otherwise, it was understood, appointment of Gen. Rabin as head of Israel’s highest technical institution would be considered a fitting honor when he completes his present ambassadorial tour of duty.
