The chairman of Moscow’s religious Jewish community, Ephraim Kaplun, also the new chairman of the Moscow synagogue, reported that the Soviet government has made available to the Jewish community 200,000 pounds of flour for matzos, according to Rabbi Pinchas Teitz of Elizabeth, N.J, He said Kaplun told him in a telephone conversation that matzos are being baked on the synagogue premises and that they are working day and night shifts.

Rabbi Teitz also said that in another telephone conversation, Moshe Litunski, chairman of the Leningrad synagogue, told him that 100,000 pounds of flour was made available to the Leningrad Jewish community. The matzos, he said, were being baked in the synagogue. Litunski said he considered the gift of flour a “good gesture,” especially in view of the fact that Russia this year is suffering from a wheat shortage and was forced to purchase wheat from the United States and on the world market.

Kaplun also reported that a kosher butcher shop was opened in the yard of the Moscow synagogue and that kosher meat was made available for those who want it. Such facilities have not existed before, he reported.

A Miami Beach city ordinance banning the wearing of swastikas or Communist insignia was struck down there by Circuit Court Judge Grady Crawford. In his ruling last Thursday Judge Crawford said that the wearing of an arm band “as a political symbol is a right protected by the Constitution.” The decision overturned the Municipal Court’s conviction of Matt Koehl, leader of the National Socialist Party, a neo-Nazi group.
