High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope was reported today to have repeated an invitation to Arab leaders to confer with Colonial Secretary J. H. Thomas in London on matters affecting the government of Palestine.
In a conference with members of the Arab Supreme Council, organized to push a general strike against Jewish immigration and sale of land to Jews, Sir Arthur is said to have offered certain concessions to the Arabs in order to bring the strike to an end. The strike is in its fourth week.
Bethlehem was recorded today as the first city refusing to pay taxes as an Arab campaign of civil disobedience, including withholding of taxes and a rigid boycott of everything Jewish, was scheduled to go into effect tomorrow.
The Hebrew daily, Haboker, reported that the Government intends to issue an order to Arabs to immediately open their stores or face punishment. A similar measure was employed during the 1929 disorders.
